7 days in New Caledonia
The story I wish I had read before going.
On an island you count in tides rather than hours. 7 days in New Caledonia is time enough to go around it and leave a bit of yourself.
Day 1 · The icons
In the morning, meet me at Bonhomme de Bourail (rock formation). It’s the kind of place that makes you go quiet for a moment, even when you thought you knew it all. Practical: the public-transport route, and if you’d rather skip the queue, get your tickets in advance or also check Tiqets.
At lunchtime, stay around Bourail: a noisy room, a dish of the day, and you’ve understood everything.
Then, it’s Musee De Bourail. The audio guides are worth it; otherwise, follow a group and steal three anecdotes on the way. To get organised: here is the route by public transport; skip-the-line book your tickets, otherwise compare on Tiqets.
In the evening, let go: a terrace, a walk, and New Caledonia does the rest.
Day 2 · Fresh air
To start, head to Parc provincial des Grandes Fougères. This is the breath of the trip. Even one hour changes the day. Travellers give it 4.7 out of 5 (234 reviews) and I won’t argue with them. To get organised: how to get there; skip-the-line book your visit, otherwise go through Tiqets.
For lunch, Farino 98881 is full of options: trust the rooms full of locals rather than the menus translated into six languages.
Around noon, I make my way to Fort Teremba. Give it a good two hours, and leave before you are full: that is the secret to wanting to come back. Practical: how to get there, and if you’d rather skip the queue, book your tickets or compare on Tiqets.
Keep the evening free. New Caledonia is a city that tells itself better at night.
Day 3 · Free day
Free day. Sleep in, walk without a map, go back to whatever struck you. It is often on that day that you understand why people love New Caledonia.
If the urge to move comes back: Heart of Voh, Lagoon Aquarium and Cascade de Ny.
And if New Caledonia already feels familiar, a day trip for the day always does good.
In the evening, let go: a terrace, a walk, and New Caledonia does the rest.
Day 4 · Free day
A day with no plan, on purpose. I would go back to wherever felt good the day before, take a market in the morning and a terrace in the afternoon. You stop visiting New Caledonia and start living in it a little.
For those who cannot sit still, a few ideas: Noumea turtle tour, Place des Cocotiers and Lyvai Tours.
Another option: a day trip from New Caledonia, booked the night before, leaving in the morning.

Day 5 · Free day
Nothing scheduled today: this is the day every overpacked trip is missing. A coffee that lingers, a random neighbourhood, a museum if it rains. New Caledonia is easier to tame this way.

Day 6 · Day trip
Early in the morning, meet me at Tjibaou Cultural Centre. I always pick two or three rooms rather than seeing everything. You walk out light. 4.5 out of 5 across 831 reviews: few places are this unanimous. Practical: how to get there, and if you’d rather skip the queue, book your tickets or compare on Tiqets.
Late morning, head to Notre Dame Du Pacifique. Bring water, shoes that hold, and no watch. To get organised: the public-transport route; skip-the-line book your visit, otherwise compare on Tiqets.
Day 7 · Day trip
In the morning, head to Amédée Lighthouse. Take the time to walk all the way around it; the best views are rarely at the entrance. 4.7 out of 5 across 441 reviews: few places are this unanimous. Practical: how to get there, and if you’d rather skip the queue, get your tickets in advance or compare on Tiqets.
If you’re still hungry
Other places I wish I could have fitted in: Heart of Voh, Lagoon Aquarium, Cascade de Ny, Noumea turtle tour, Place des Cocotiers and Lyvai Tours. Slip them in wherever a day feels light.
My advice
Walk. Then take public transport: that is where you see the city live.
Book the busiest places the day before: queues have ruined more than one morning.
Keep a little local cash: the best addresses are often the least equipped.
And if you go, tell me what you loved. New Caledonia changes, and so do I.

Opening hours, prices and closures change: a quick look at the venue’s website before you go avoids bad surprises.
