A weekend in Rio de Janeiro
Told the way I’d tell a friend, step by step.
Rio is the only city where nature wins: the forest comes down to the buildings, mountains rise out of the sea, and the beach is a living room where everyone meets. I take you from the Christ to the Sugarloaf, then to Santa Teresa for a caipirinha, always keeping an eye on the sky: it sets the timetable.
Day 1 · Fresh air
To start, head to Sugarloaf Mountain. Two cable cars, and sunset over Copacabana, Botafogo and the lit Christ in the distance. Take the late-afternoon slot. 4.8 out of 5 across 8,970 reviews: few places are this unanimous. To get organised: the public-transport route; skip-the-line book your tickets, otherwise go through Tiqets.
Late morning, I make my way to Pão de Açúcar. Take the time to walk all the way around it; the best views are rarely at the entrance. Practical: how to get there, and if you’d rather skip the queue, get your tickets in advance or also check Tiqets.
At lunchtime, stay around Rio de Janeiro: a noisy room, a dish of the day, and you’ve understood everything.
Later, it’s Mureta da Urca. You’ve seen it a hundred times in pictures; in person it is bigger, closer, more alive. Travellers give it 4.8 out of 5 (4,845 reviews) and I won’t argue with them. To get organised: here is the route by public transport; skip-the-line book your visit, otherwise compare on Tiqets.
As the light fades, meet me at Monumento Natural dos Morros do Pão de Açúcar e da Urca. Go late in the afternoon: the heat drops, the light softens and the photos take themselves. 4.9 out of 5 across 60,744 reviews: few places are this unanimous. To get organised: here is the route by public transport; skip-the-line book your tickets, otherwise go through Tiqets.
Once night falls, A match at the Maracanã: Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco or Botafogo: it hardly matters, the stadium sings for ninety minutes. Take a guided outing to go safely. Practical: how to get there, and if you’d rather skip the queue, book your visit or also check Tiqets.
Day 2 · Fresh air
In the morning, meet me at Christ the Redeemer. The little rack train through the Tijuca forest, then the statue and the whole city at its feet. Go early in the morning under a clear sky, without waiting: the clouds come quickly. 4.8 out of 5 across 132,835 reviews: few places are this unanimous. To get organised: the public-transport route; skip-the-line get your tickets in advance, otherwise go through Tiqets.
Around noon, I make my way to Grutas - Parque Lage. It’s the kind of place that makes you go quiet for a moment, even when you thought you knew it all. To get organised: how to get there; skip-the-line get your tickets in advance, otherwise compare on Tiqets.
For lunch, Rio de Janeiro - RJ is full of options: trust the rooms full of locals rather than the menus translated into six languages.
In the afternoon, I make my way to Parque Lage. Bring water, shoes that hold, and no watch. Travellers give it 4.6 out of 5 (51,443 reviews) and I won’t argue with them. To get organised: how to get there; skip-the-line get your tickets in advance, otherwise also check Tiqets.
In the evening, it’s Mirante Dona Marta. This is the breath of the trip. Even one hour changes the day. 4.8 out of 5 across 10,257 reviews: few places are this unanimous. Practical: here is the route by public transport, and if you’d rather skip the queue, book your tickets or go through Tiqets.
In the evening, Samba night in Lapa: The arches, the bars, the samba bands playing until dawn. On Friday nights, Rio dances here. To get organised: here is the route by public transport; skip-the-line book your visit, otherwise go through Tiqets.
If you’re still hungry
I still have a few up my sleeve: Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, Pedra do Arpoador, Leblon Beach, Fiocruz - Moorish Castle, Sugar Loaf cable car and Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. Your call.
My advice
On the beach, keep only the essentials on you; the rest stays at the hotel. A simple rule that makes everything lighter.
The metro and ride-hailing are reliable for long journeys; the Zona Sul neighbourhoods are walked by day.
An açaí for breakfast, a rodízio one evening, a caipirinha at sunset: the programme does not change.
Safe travels. And get lost at least once; that is where Rio de Janeiro begins.

Opening hours, prices and closures change: a quick look at the venue’s website before you go avoids bad surprises.
